Postgraduate Research

 

The Department of Otolaryngology offers study programs for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medical Science and Masters' degrees by research. Medical Graduates may also undertake a Master of Surgery in the Department. Research may be undertaken in a diverse range of disciplines including auditory neuroscience, bioengineering, electrophysiology, psychophysics, audiology, speech science, education and linguistics. The application of research projects may be technological,clinical or commercial. Research is conducted under the auspices of the Department of Otolaryngology, The Bionics Institute, or the HEARing Cooperative Research Centre (HEARing CRC). Undertaking a research project in association with the HEARing CRC is likely to involve working in collaboration with industry and client partners - developing commercial and project management skills alongside advanced research and technical skills.

Entry Requirements

The academic prerequisite for entry into a postgraduate research degree at the University of Melbourne is either an Honours degree with a substantial research component in the final year e.g. BSc Hons or an equivalent degree, such as a 4 year engineering degree.

Applicants will be assessed using the standards outlined in the PhD handbook

All prospective students, both local and international, must first make contact with the Department’s Student Services Team by email: oto-audrhd@unimelb.edu.au

In your email you should include evidence of meeting the following requirements:

  •         Minimum academic standards for entry (i.e. your academic transcripts)
  •          English language and residency/visa requirements
  •         Information on scholarships or sponsorships awarded to you, or for which you may be eligible

You should also include:

  •         Information about yourself and your area of interest and expertise
  •         Which research area and project/s you are interested in.
  •         Your Curriculum Vitae

 

The Student Services Team will then review your documentation and provide advice on the next stage of the application process. Please be aware that this may take up to two weeks depending on the time of year.

Please note:  Applicants should not make direct contact with supervisors or complete any application until the initial screening process has been completed. Applications from students who have not followed these initial steps or instructions will be rejected.

Scholarships

The majority of the Department's full-time PhD students are the recipients of scholarships awarded on academic merit. Information about scholarships is available on the University of Melbourne postgraduate scholarships page. Students need to make appropriate arrangements for financial support for the full extent of their candidature.

The HEARing CRC HEARing CRC  also provides a number of full-time scholarships for students within the Department. 

Advanced ENT Surgical Trainees, who wish to undertake postgraduate study, may be eligible to apply to the Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation for a Scholarship in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Prospective students should contact the Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation for further details.
